About Paita

History of Paita

Paita is the capital of the province with the same name, which is one of the 8 provinces that are part of the department of Piura. At the territory that covers the province, close to the mouth of the Chira river, were settled the first human groups of the region, developing for centuries until communities and populated places were established, among the ones stand out the tallan ethnic group. The culture of the tallanes is characterized by the maritime and coast lifestyle of the people, always linked to the sea and the fishing activity. As a city, it was founded by the Spanish in 1532 during the colonial period, under the name of San Francisco de Paita de la Buena Esperanza, although over the years the city would be known just as Paita. The origin of the city's name is quechua voices, which make reference to the desert and the loneliness that it represents. Some people give a poetic interpretation to the name as "the city of God, solitary in the desert", although it's nearer to be "place that is alone in the desert".

-Paita is located at 35,4 mi (57 km) from the city of Piura, at the seashore of the Pacific Ocean.
-The climate in Paita is warm, although with humidity most of the year, with average temperatures of 80,6 °F (27 °C).

-One of the most crowded beaches by the summer vacationers is Colan, considered one of the most amazing of the north coast, located at just 15 min from Paita.

How to get around in Paita?

The main mean of transportation in the city of Paita is the mototaxi, since the urban area is little and the distances are short. The average cost of the vehicles is s/ 2 to s/ 6. You can also board to shared taxis for a similar rate, although in general they are used to go to other districts of the province, where are placed the rest tourist attractions of the area.

Risks and cautions of Paita

The risks that you can face in Paita are of natural kind, as a heat stroke. It affects mainly children and old men. Look at the temperatures before travelling if you do your route with those risky groups.
Another risk is the theft. Avoid to show your highly valued objects in public and also avoid to go by yourself to desolate places. If you are cautious like that, you won't have any worries.
Recently there have occured sanitary crisis due to the propagation of illnesses as dengue, zika and chikungunya in the district of Piura. Nevertheless, the risks have been reduced with sanitary campaigns and dusting, but take your preventive measures just in case.

Getting to Paita

Plaza de Armas of Paita

Even if it's a little square, its charm is great. It's the main meeting point of locals in Paita, where the civic events take place. Furthermore it's surrounded by constructions and colonial mansions.

Templo de Nuestra Señora de la Merced
Location: Av. La Merced, close to the Plaza de Armas.
Hours: 9:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

It's the oldest church of the Piura department, with an antiquity that dates from middle of the 16th century. Its structure suffered diverse natural disasters, reason why the church was restored and combines different architecture styles. You can distinguish the Rococo, Baroque and Churrigueresco style among others. Inside there is a deep devotion to the image of the Virgen de las Mercedes, patron saint that is paid tribute to in September.

Casa Manuelita Sáenz
Location: Jr. Nueva de Pozo N° 391

It's a construction of great historic value, since it was the last home of the woman who captivated the liberator Simon Bolivar, standing out also due to its tireless and valuable contribution to the Independence cause.

Port of Paita
Location: at 2 min. from the Plaza de Armas

The port is considered one of the oldest in Peru and from there you can see all kind of ships sailing through the Paita sea.

Around Paita

Yacila beach
Location: at just 8 mi (13 km) to the south-west of Paita

This small beach measures 1509 feet (460 meters) long and 656 feet (200 meters) wide and usually was called the beach of artisan fishermen, although during the summer becomes a beach of white sand and not so deep waters, just ideal for the people who look for calm, sun and some adventure. Nearby you can practice sport fishing, rappel in the cliffs, swimming and sandboarding, since there is a sand dune of 49 feet (15 meters).

Foca Island
Location: at 23 km. (20 min.) from the port of Paita.
Hours: 9:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.

It's the only Peruvian island of easy access to the people who want to learn about the huge marine biodiversity of the coast region. Among the species that you will contemplate on the route, there are seals, turtles, dolphins, penguins and guano birds.

The things to do in Paita

Adventure sports in Colan beach
Location: at 15 min. from the city, take a combi for s/ 2
In the emerald color waters of this crowded beach are practiced sports as surf, windsurf, jet ski, paragliding and quad bikes. If you have never tried, this is your chance, there are also instructors to teach you. Colan is one of the favorite destination to the traveler who recognize the sentence "Sun of colan and moon of Paita", since in Colan you can enjoy an excellent climate of beautiful twilights and in Paita you can appreciate the majesty of an immense silver moon. If you go to get to know this paradise beach with your family, you will get the best out of it.

Gastronomy in Paita

Typical dishes in Paita

As Paita is a port city and of ancestral marine tradition, the main dishes of the gastronomy are made of fish and other sea species.

Caballa pasada por agua caliente
The mackerell is cleaned to be boiled for 5 minutes. Once it's ready, you add a sauce of chilly pepper, onion, tomato, coriander, lemon juice, salt and oil. It's served with boiled manioc and sliced fried banana.

Ceviche
The preparation of this dish doesn't vary a lot from the one of other coast cities. To cook it, you boil fish slices in lemon juice, all of it with onions, salt, chilly peppers and coriander. Once that is ready, it's served with potatoes and a lettuce leaf.

Tortilla de raya
This ray omelette is made cleaning well the ray and leaving it in water 24 hours, before preparing it. When it's ready the fish pass through hot water and then is put in a bowl of eggs onions and other spices. You mix up all the ingredients and put them in a frying pan with oil, until it's crunchy and gold-colored. Enjoy it as with the side dish that you prefer.

Sudado de pescado
In the preparation of this dish, you take the fish cut in slices, seasoned with salt and pepper. Then you put them in a dressing of chilly pepper, garlic, tomato and onions. The combination is boiled  in a closed pot for 10 minutes, and you add coriander and a chilly pepper. And you wait until the steam cooks it. Enjoy it with a boiled manioc and rice. Something just exquisite!!

Parihuela
This nourishing dish is made of fishes and shellfishes. First you fry the slices of fish with onion, garlic, tomato, chilly pepper and the spices. Then you add some wine and leave it cook for 5 minutes. And afterwards you put it in a soup of fish heads and mussels. At the end it's served with shellfish, mussels, with lemon, salt and pepper.

Paita by bus

To get to Paita is quite easy and takes little time if you travel from any of the districts and provinces of the Piura department. To travel from Lima you can contract the services of the bus company Civa, with the services of Econociva and Superciva. The time of travel lasts about 17 hours, boarding in a bus from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. The price of the bus tickets goes from s/ 50 to s/ 100 (the prices are a reference, it depends on the season).
